ANGEL is the online/distance learning Learning Management System (LMS) used by our instructors and students. Once you're accepted for enrollment and registered for classes, almost everything you'll do and need as an online student will happen in ANGEL. We suggest you bookmark this link to ANGEL: https://my.iavalley.edu.
ANGEL overview
ANGEL is an acronym for A New Global Environment for Learning. If you hear someone referring to ANGEL, they are talking about the https://my.iavalley.edu website.
The first thing you need to know about using ANGEL is how to find stuff. It's functioning as a website, so you need to read what's on the screen and click the links to move around. ANGEL has a variety of things you should learn: drop boxes so you can turn in assignments, navigation toolbars and tabs, an internal electronic mail feature we call Course Mail or ANGEL mail, as well as discussion forums and chat rooms so that you can communicate with your instructors and classmates. There is a lot to ANGEL, so knowing how to move around and how to find help is important.
Before you start exploring, there is one important thing to remember: When working with ANGEL, make sure that you open only one browser window or tab at a time. ANGEL will lose authentication and you become disconnected if you open multiple tabs or windows. (And you don't want take a 100 question test just to find out that it was never submitted because you had multiple windows opened, right?)
Remember that every course site on ANGEL may look a little different because instructors can change the background colors, the names of the tabs across the top (Course, Calendar, Modules), or they may choose not use all of the available features. If you have questions about how your course site is set up, the first step is to contact the instructor of that course.

ANGEL account information & user orientation
All enrolled students are given access to https://my.iavalley.edu, also referred to as ANGEL. To log in, you must follow these steps:
- In your browser, go to https://my.iavalley.edu.
- Log in using your student ID number as username, for example: 321321. This is the same ID number you use to access college computers on campus.
- Initial password is set to your birth date in the ‘mmddyyyy' format (for example, Aug 25, 2001 will be 08252001).
- Upon first login, you will be asked to change your password. Your username and password will be the same for CampusWeb (JICS) where registration, billing advising, etc. are kept, and the college on-campus network (which gives you access to your H drive and lets you login to the school computers).
Please memorize your ID number. You will be using it often while you attend college! If you do not know your ID number, you can contact the Registrar's Office or Admissions. The ID number should be listed on your student ID card or on any college bill.
After you log in, you will be on your Home page. This is the main clearing station for all of your ANGEL activities. On the Home page, you will see a list of all of your college courses.
When you log in, you will automatically have access to the Student Orientation for ANGEL Users course. Please take time to read through the course materials so that you understand the basic features and capabilities of the ANGEL platform.
When you log in, you may also see a list of groups such as All ECC Students 2012-2013 or MCC Soccer Team 2012-2013. These groups will be used to keep you up-to-date with extracurricular activities, events, and college-wide announcements.
If you ever have any technical trouble using ANGEL, contact helpdesk@iavalley.edu or call us at 641-844-5555.
Oh, and don't forget about PawPass, a web page with frequently used links for students and staff!
- If you are taking an online course, it will be on ANGEL.
- If you are taking on-campus courses, please understand that not all of your courses will have ANGEL content. While all instructors will be keeping attendance records in ANGEL, some instructors will use ANGEL more often than others. They may post syllabi, grades, handouts, PowerPoints, etc.
- If you are taking an online course, you may be required to create additional usernames and passwords for outside websites (for example, if your textbook publisher provides online content). We recommend that you do not use your Iowa Valley student ID/password combination for these sites.
ANGEL course mail & student e-mail accounts
ANGEL course mail
Communication in online courses will mainly take place via the ANGEL Course Mail accessible through the Communicate tab in ANGEL. Course mail is a closed system and students can only send messages to their instructors and classmates (similar to “Messages” on Facebook). Course mail will not allow you to send messages to traditional e-mail addresses. Students must click the “To:” button to select recipients.
Instructors have the option of sending messages to both the students’ ANGEL course mail and their student e-mail account.
To access your course mail, log in to ANGEL system at https://my.iavalley.edu/, click on a specific course or group link, then click the Communicate tab and View Inbox.
Student e-mail accounts
All students have access to their own college e-mail address. This e-mail will be used as the primary source of communication with all students for college-wide announcements. Students are expected to check their college e-mail address on a regular basis to receive important information and updates.
Most instructors will communicate with you through the ANGEL course mail system, but you should also read your messages through your student e-mail account, since e-mails and reminders from student services will be sent to your college e-mail account.
Login instructions:
- Go to http://outlook.com/iavalley.edu
- Your Windows Live Login is your IVCCD ID number@students.iavalley.edu
(i.e. 123456@students.iavalley.edu) - Your password is your birthdate formatted as mmddyyyy.
- YOUR E-MAIL ADDRESS IS NOT THE SAME AS YOUR LOGIN ID!
- Most users will have an e-mail address as their firstname.lastname@students.iavalley.edu.
* Important exceptions: Because of duplicate names, you will need to check your e-mail address after you login. You will see it displayed in the upper right corner of Outlook Web App.
- More features included once you log into your account, including links to IVCCD websites, Microsoft Office apps to do your school work, SkyDrive (25GB of free online storage for sharing Microsoft Office docs, spreadsheets, presentations, and photos), etc.

Forwarding your ANGEL course mail to your student e-mail account
Beginning in the fall 2012 semester, will automatically populate the e-mail field on ANGEL with your official students.iavalley.edu e-mail account. By default, your ANGEL course mail will not be forwarded to your students.iavalley.edu e-mail.
You can set up course mail forwarding by going to your ANGEL Inbox >> Preferences (top right corner) >> Forward to Internet E-Mail. Then select your preferred forwarding mode and Save. This will ensure that your e-mail is forwarded to your student.iavalley.edu account.
Forwarding your student e-mail to an external e-mail account
If you prefer, you can forward your student e-mail to an e-mail address you check more frequently, such as hotmail, yahoo, or gmail.
To do so, log into your student e-mail, then click on Options >> See all options >> Connected Accounts >> scroll down and enter your other e-mail into the “Forward my e-mail to:” box.
