Vocational Services Programs For Adults with Disabilities

Objectives
The training objective of the Career Development Centers may be either to develop maximum student independence or to maintain current levels of functioning while providing a means of alleviating stress in the home setting. Each CDC is a community-based program which seeks movement toward the full integration of individuals with disabilities into the community.

Purpose
The Career Development Centers (CDC) are vocational services programs which serve adults with mental retardation or those who are developmentally disabled in Marshall, Tama and Poweshiek counties.

Iowa Valley Community College District administers the CDCs by authority of the Code of Iowa’s provisions for providing services to persons with disabilities. CDC sites are in Grinnell, Marshalltown and Tama .

The Career Development Centers are approved by the Iowa Department of Education, and IVCCD is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and CARF, the Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission.

The purpose of the CDC day program is to provide age-appropriate, individualized vocational training based on individual needs. Areas of emphasis include:
  • Personal-social skills
  • Communication skills
  • Daily living skills
  • Paid work activities
  • Pre-vocational development

Mission – We create an enriching, quality life experience for adults with disabilities.

Principles
  • Partnerships: We partner with local businesses, community and each other for unity.
  • Empowerment: We instill vocational, social and individual independence.
  • Recognition and success: We give our time, talent and treasures to assist others in the community.
  • Respect for Individuals: We accept and appreciate the diversity of people.
Statement of Accessibility
The CDCs actively promote full program inclusion and services accessibility to each person enrolled. Continual efforts are made by IVCCD to recruit individuals with disabilities as staff members, volunteers and advisory council members.

CDC staff, administration and other IVCCD personnel continually seek to remove attitudinal and architectural barriers and promote social and economic opportunities in the community for persons with disabilities. All CDC program areas are architecturally barrier-free.

Health & Safety
The safety committees of the CDCs, comprised of the respective coordinators and the director, meet quarterly to review emergency safety plans and inspections.

Procedures for handling emergency situations have been established with regard to fire, tornado, injury, evacuation to temporary shelter, emergency transportation needs, bomb threats and power failures.

Program Calendar
The Career Development Centers operate 220 days per year, including eight weeks during the summer.

Each CDC is community-based and takes advantage of local community and county resources for varied personal, vocational, social, and community learning/training activities.
