Creativity, initiative, good communication skills, and self-confidence are qualities of someone in the communications field. Journalism centers on newspaper and magazine writing, radio and television broadcasting, and advertising. Public relations professionals work at management and public relations firms, healthcare organizations, social services agencies, advertising agencies, government agencies, and colleges and universities. They help build and maintain positive relationships with the public. Many public relations jobs also include advertising, promotion, marketing, and sales.
Employment in public relations jobs is expected to increase much faster than average for all occupations through 2016. Some job growth is expected in radio and television stations. More rapid growth is anticipated in new media areas such as online newspapers and magazines. The newspaper and broadcasting industries are vulnerable to economic ups and downs since they depend on advertising revenue. Employment of writers and editors is expected to increase faster than average as magazines and other periodicals develop special interest publications. Job opportunities are often best when college graduates can combine their degrees with internships and other related work experience and can develop a specialty such as law, medicine or economics.
