Pharmacy
Career
Pharmacists dispense medications prescribed by physicians and other health professionals. They provide information to patients about the medications. Pharmacy aides help pharmacists with the administrative duties in running a pharmacy. Pharmacy technicians help prepare prescriptions by counting tablets, labeling bottles, mixing and pouring medicines. Technicians also establish, maintain and read patient profiles and charts. All jobs interact with the public so good communication skills are important.
Job outlook
Job openings will be created by employment growth and the need to replace workers who leave the labor force. Employment of pharmacy aides is expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations through 2016 due to the medical needs of a larger and older population. Opportunities for technicians are expected to grow faster than average, as they will assume responsibility for more tasks previously performed by pharmacists. Pharmacists jobs are also projected to increase faster than average due to the increased needs of the older population. Scientific advances will also create the need for pharmacy related occupations.
