An inquiring mind about the nature of society and why groups and individuals behave as they do, relating well with others, and the ability to communicate findings of research and studies are important qualities of sociologists. Sociologists study human society and the social behavior of families, communities and government, social, religious, political, business, and other organizations. Their research provides insights that help us understand different ways individuals and groups make decisions, exercise power and respond to change. Their research aids educators, lawmakers, administrators and others interested in resolving social problems and formulating public policy.
Sociology is one of the fields within the area of social science that is expected to do better than average for all occupations through 2016. Prospects are best for those with advanced degrees.
