Iowa Automobile Dealers Foundation for Education awards scholarship to local student

The Iowa Automobile Dealers Foundation for Education awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Lanie Scheetz of Williamsburg. Wes Finch Auto Plaza in Grinnell recommended Scheetz for the scholarship. Scheetz is enrolled in the auto tech program at Iowa Valley Community College.

IVCCD moves forward with Internationalization Plan

Over the past several months, Iowa Valley Community College District has been exploring new ways to further its internationalization efforts to benefit Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Marshalltown Community College, and Iowa Valley Grinnell. An Internationalization Task Force, consisting of faculty, administration and staff from all campuses, has drafted a Comprehensive Internationalization Plan with strategies to enhance the international education opportunities for students. The plan includes developing education abroad opportunities for students and exchange opportunities for faculty, increasing the presence of international students and underrepresented minority students on the campuses, promoting cultural competency, and building a supportive and inclusive climate in which all faculty, staff, and students can thrive.

Iowa Valley Grinnell students Ranae Hamor and Hollis Anderson were honored as members of the 2013 All-Iowa Academic Team at a banquet held recently in Des Moines. The Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) sponsored the banquet. A maximum of two students per campus are nominated each year and are honored for their outstanding academic achievements and leadership by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. Iowa Valley Board approves new Gunsmithing Tech program offered in Grinnell

The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors approved the new Gunsmithing Technology program at the Board meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The planning for this academic program has been in development for over a year, and it will be the only one of its kind in the state. This 2-year program is set to launch this coming fall and will be offered at Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell.

Christie Jack of Grinnell had a full-time job, a husband, two athletic children, and a household to care for when she enrolled full-time in Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell in January 2011. She already had an Associates Degree in education but the Paralegal program sparked an interest in continuing her education. The Iowa Valley class schedule offered Christie the ability to continue to work and care for her family while going to college.

One hundred eighty-seven students were named to the Spring 2012 (January to May) Dean's List at Marshalltown Community College/Iowa Valley Grinnell. To be eligible for the Dean's List, students must have taken 12 or more credit hours during the semester (a full-time class load) and have earned at least a 3.5 grade point average while attending MCC classes in Marshalltown, at Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell, or online. (Note: Developmental courses do not count towards GPA.) Part-time students are not included in this list. Some students asked to have their name withheld from media and the public in keeping with their rights under the Family Education Rights & Privacy Act of 1974 (Buckley Amendment). The staff and administration congratulate these students for their academic excellence.

Hybrid technology a large part of the new Automotive Tech program at Iowa Valley Grinnell

The Iowa Office of Energy Independence along with Consumers Energy of Marshalltown have partnered to fund a grant providing Marshalltown Community College with new hybrid technology. The grant paid for a hybrid car as well as other equipment that will be used in Iowa Valley Grinnell's new Automotive Technology program beginning in January.

Marshalltown Community College and Iowa Valley Grinnell's spring term semester begins Monday, Jan. 9, and runs through May 4. Registration for the spring term is now open, and registrations should be completed soon. The MCC Registrar and Admissions Offices are located at 3700 South Center St. in Marshalltown. IV Grinnell's offices are at 123 6^th Ave. West, Grinnell, IA. They will be accepting registrations until Jan. 9, although those who register sooner will be most likely to get their first choice of classes.

IVCC Grinnell inducts new Phi Theta Kappa members

The Beta Sigma Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell inducted nine new members during a ceremony held May 1. Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society for two-year colleges. To qualify for membership students must be in a degree-seeking program with a cumulative 3.5 GPA, and have completed a minimum of 12 credit hours. Advisors of the Beta Sigma Chi Chapter are Andrea Gotta, associate dean of IVCC Grinnell, and Ben Jones, IVCC Grinnell math instructor.

IVCCD Board approves Paralegal Program

The Iowa Valley Community College District Board of Directors took the next step toward making a Paralegal Associate of Applied Science degree available to students when they approved the proposal at the April board meeting. Ed Jorgensen, JD, teaches law classes at Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell. He had 36 students enrolled in a Paralegal Studies Orientation class this year, showing interest in the two-year Paralegal program. The final step is the Iowa Department of Education’s approval of the program degree.

Iowa Valley Community College District is pleased to announce the hiring of MaryAnne Zanella Nickle as the new Dean of Iowa Valley Community College Grinnell, effective Dec. 13. Dean Nickle comes to Iowa from the Community College of Denver (CCD) in Colorado where she was an administrator and dean for six and a half years. She brings a wealth of experience in college transition and career and technical education.
