Thirteen MCC students earn Microsoft Certifications

Marshalltown Community College is an approved testing center offering Microsoft Office Specialist certification exams for Word, Word Expert, Excel, Excel Expert, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook. The certification is a valuable credential that recognizes the desktop computing skills needed to use the full features and functionality of the software and promotes academic preparedness and workforce readiness for students.

Former MCC nursing student honored with prestigious award

Former Marshalltown Community College nursing student, Sadie Monaghan, now a nurse at Mercy Medical Center - Centerville was honored with The DAISY Award for extraordinary nurses. The award is part of The DAISY Foundation's program to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

MCC Class of 2013 takes the next step

One hundred sixty-one Marshalltown Community College students walked across the stage during the 85^th annual commencement ceremony Friday, May 10, in the MCC Student Activity Center. The MCC Class of 2013 includes 403 graduate applicants; 68 who completed their coursework in the fall of 2012, and 335 who intend to complete in the spring/summer.

Cast announced for Orpheum's summer mystery musical

There is definitely something afoot at the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center these days. The Orpheum is done with auditions and has just finished casting this summer's feature production, Something's Afoot, a murder mystery musical set for June 21-30. The musical is based on And Then There Were None (a.k.a. Ten Little Indians) and will use automated special effects to portray the mystery and the magic of a typical Agatha Christie 'whodunnit'.

Sophomore class leaves mark on MCC soccer program

The Marshalltown Community College soccer team has had great success the past two years and a lot of that has to do with this group of graduating sophomores. These players saw their team reach 26 victories in two years at MCC, and were nationally ranked at the end of both seasons (No. 20 in 2011 and No. 11 in 2012). This year the Tigers won the Region XI championship, finishing fifth at the 2012 National Tournament.

East Marshall takes home trophy at MCC's First Annual Career and Technical Spring Extravaganza

Marshalltown Community College hosted its first ever Career and Technical Spring Extravaganza on Wednesday, May 1, which featured competitions between over 100 students from area high school schools. Students from BCLUW, East Marshall, West Marshall, GMG, and Marshalltown competed in business, metals, woods, and culinary areas at MCC's BTC/Construction Building.

MCC Construction Technology Open House is May 10

MCC Student Photography Show open in Ray Frederick Gallery

Students of Marshalltown Community College's Photography II class invite you to a showing of their work in the Ray Frederick Gallery, Room 306, on the MCC Campus. Instructor Dennis Johnson and his students selected a variety of images that reflect individual creativity and inspiration. The Ray Frederick Gallery is open weekdays from 9 am to 5 pm. The gallery will also be open on Friday evening, May 10, during the MCC Commencement and reception for graduates so parents and guests can enjoy the exhibit.

MCC seeks host family for YFU student this summer and fall

Marshalltown Community College welcomed two new Youth for Understanding (YFU) international exchange students for the 2012-13 spring semester, one of whom will be back in the fall of 2013. Haeri, 22, from South Korea, is seeking a host family this summer and fall.

MCC announces 'Spring Extravaganza'--career & technical competition set for May 1

Marshalltown Community College will host its first ever 'Spring Extravaganza' event this May that will feature career and technical competitions between area high school students. The festivities will take place on May 1, at the BTC/Construction Building from 9 am - 1 pm. Over 100 students from five local high schools will be competing in business, metals, woods, and culinary areas. This competition will become a yearly event for the college.

IVCCD moves forward with Internationalization Plan

Over the past several months, Iowa Valley Community College District has been exploring new ways to further its internationalization efforts to benefit Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Marshalltown Community College, and Iowa Valley Grinnell. An Internationalization Task Force, consisting of faculty, administration and staff from all campuses, has drafted a Comprehensive Internationalization Plan with strategies to enhance the international education opportunities for students. The plan includes developing education abroad opportunities for students and exchange opportunities for faculty, increasing the presence of international students and underrepresented minority students on the campuses, promoting cultural competency, and building a supportive and inclusive climate in which all faculty, staff, and students can thrive.

IVCCD celebrates National Poetry Month at the Orpheum

'The Grey Area'--2013 Best Documentary Award winner comes to the Orpheum

On Thursday, April 18, the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center will feature a special showing of The Grey Area. This Iowa documentary originated from the Grinnell College Prison Project, which teaches and follows a group of female inmates at the maximum-security prison in Mitchellville, Iowa. The film gives us an intimate view of the Iowa prison system and the compelling stories that are behind the walls.

The Perfect Setting of Marshalltown presents Charlotte's Web this weekend as it becomes the first member of the new Orpheum Marquee Club at the IVCCD Orpheum Theater Center. The Marquee Club allows local businesses such as The Perfect Setting, a unique advertising opportunity by sponsoring a movie shown at the Orpheum Theater Center. Only in Marshalltown can businesses get their name in lights for seven days on the Main Street marquee. Local business were sent information on the Marquee Club last week inviting them to take advantage of this Marshalltown only advertising opportunity while at the same time supporting a community cause for affordable entertainment for families and seniors.

Marshalltown Community College students Chris Caird of Daventry, England and Cynthia Grimm of Marshalltown, were honored as members of the 2013 All-Iowa Academic Team at a banquet held recently in Des Moines. The Iowa Association of Community College Trustees (IACCT) sponsored the banquet. A maximum of two students per campus are nominated each year and are honored for their outstanding academic achievements and leadership by Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges. Both students are members of MCC's Alpha Iota Rho Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

MCC Career Expo features high-energy motivational speaker

Motivational speaker and author Matt Booth will talk to nearly 900 high school juniors on Tuesday, April 16, at 9:15 am for Marshalltown Community College's annual Career Expo. Booth's message sets the tone for a day centered on career exploration for high school students. MCC, in cooperation with at least 10 area high school counselors and multiple businesses, welcomes students to learn about employment options for their future by hearing from the experts - professionals from a variety of vocations within the community. The MCC Career Expo is sponsored by Emerson Process Management of Marshalltown.
