Creative Retirement
Persons need to be Creative Retirement members to sign up for Creative Retirement classes. Cost of is $10 and is good through the membership year (Sept. 2013). You’ve heard of an “FYI,” but this program is a “JFY” – Just For You Creative Retirement Members. Hear the latest information on the new proposed Alliant Natural Gas Plant in Marshalltown, presented by David Vollmar from Alliant Energy. There will be time to ask your questions to Alliant, as well as get a tour of the Alliant Training Center, hosted by Bob Hiatt from Alliant Energy. This session will be held out at the Alliant Training Center on South 19th Avenue in Marshalltown. Directions: Head East on East Anson Street. Cross South 18th Avenue, continue East on East Anson. You will pass Morgan-Hauser Steel (on the corner). Turn left at Marshalltown Packaging, and head north down the circular drive. The Alliant Training Center is located directly across from Hoglund Buses, a brown brick building. Hope to see you there for a real “insider’s view!”

John Ernest Vineyard
What a great way to celebrate summer! Come with us to the scenic John Ernest Vineyard and Winery in Tama. We’ll travel by bus and enjoy a light breakfast at the winery, with a chance to view the beautiful backdrop of the vineyard. Jamie Busch-Upah, John Ernest Vineyard and Winery manager, will be our hostess. Jamie is a graduate of UNI with a degree in public relations, marketing and journalism. She began working at the winery in May 2005 with the idea of launching her family’s business into a “whirling success.” Join Jamie at the John Ernest Vineyard and Winery where she will give you some background on the wine business in Iowa, history of grapes in Iowa, information on the correct way to taste wine and explain the key components of judging the quality of wine. A tour of the winery and a question and answer period will be included. . And of course, the opportunity to sample JEV wines! The bus will depart from IVCE at 8:30 am.

New To Marshalltown Panel
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a new member to our community? How about coming here from such countries as Sudan, Mexico, Morocco, Burma and more? Creative Retirement members will have the opportunity to hear such stories of immigration to our area, what it’s like to become acclimated here, learning a new language, skills/training and employment, directly from the new residents themselves. We will meet at the IVCE Education and Training Center, 206 East Church Street, Marshalltown, hosted by Gloria DeBower, IVCE Family Literacy Coordinator. Successful Entrepreneurs
En-tre-pre-neur: risk-taking business persons: somebody who initiates or finances new commercial enterprises. Being a successful entrepreneur goes beyond definitions. Come have lunch and listen to area entrepreneurs tell their “stories” behind their success. Our panel of entrepreneurs will include: Joshua Weuve, 19, a partner in Cryogen Design, a company formed last year with Tyler Richard, 22, when they started helping school districts set up virtual reality systems and now look to extend prototypes to make 3-D printers that are easy to use for those without a heavy technical skills set; Roger Brown, Iowa River Brewing Company, a new microbrewery in Marshalltown, a small craft brewery, specializing in small batch and custom beers, with an emphasis on refining beer recipes and brewing various styles of beers, Brown remodeled the brewery building, and throughout its remodeling, repurposed and recycled materials, and Pam Swarts, owner of The Perfect Setting, a downtown Marshalltown retail business featuring local artists and their work, an art gallery, gifts and custom framing, “where art comes alive.” Come listen to these success stories and how they grew their business from an idea up!

The Affordable Care Act For Seniors
What will the Affordable Care Act mean to you? What implications will it hold for Iowa seniors? Join us for lunch to find out what the Affordable Care Act and 2014 has in store! Our speaker will be Peter Damiano, director of the University of Iowa Public Policy Center, and Professor in the Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry. He is a health services researcher studying access, utilization, and quality of care. His funded studies are primarily in the areas of health care reform, maternal and child health, health disparities and health care for underserved populations. He has authored over 100 journal articles and research monographs and been principal investigator on over 50 funded research studies. Damiano is an expert in the area of the Affordable Care Act.

The Secrets In Quilts
Come learn the secrets in quilts and how they were used by slaves, including the connection to the underground railroad. Also, learn how quilts played a role in a little known migration during Reconstruction! The speaker will have actual period quilts. Kay Weller teaches at the University of Northern Iowa. Born and raised in Western Kansas, she holds an undergraduate degree from Washburn University and an MA in Geography and PHD in Education from Kansas State University. According to Kay, her interest in African American culture and history comes from living only 15 miles from the last remaining all black town settled during Reconstruction.
