A Tour of the Universe
This three-session course will take participants on a virtual and visual tour of the remarkable objects that make up our universe and examine some of the processes that govern their behavior. The first session will focus on planets and the prospects for life beyond the earth. The lives of stars, from birth to death, including exotic objects such as black holes, will be the topic for the second session. The final session will be dedicated to galaxies and to the universe at large and its behavior. Each session will include a classroom session lasting about one hour followed by observation with the Grant O. Gale Observatory’s telescope if the weather is clear. Participants may stay for as much or as little of the observing session as they wish. Instructor Bob Cadmus has been a professor at Grinnell College since 1978 and is the person behind the Grant O. Gale Observatory and it’s various educational, research, and public outreach programs. The observatory is located at the extreme north edge of the Grinnell College campus and can be reached by following the road that goes north from 10th Avenue just to the west of the railroad tracks.

Antique Appraisal
Ranee Roed, a professional appraiser from Des Moines, is returning for an appraising session. Her appraisals are so popular that a return engagement is mandatory. She has expertise in all areas of antique valuables and will explain the history of the articles as well as the characteristics that increase or decrease value. Each participant should bring all objects that they would like appraised, and in the first round, each person will have three objects appraised. Ranee will value more items for each participant as time allows. In Ranee’s last session, all items were appraised, and the group was so interested in the variety of items brought and in Ranee’s explanations, that they stayed for the whole session. Bring your treasures and enjoy yourself! If you would like to observe rather than have any items appraised, please pay $6 at the door as an entrance fee.
