Career
Automotive service technicians and mechanics represent a 6% increase in employment projected through 2018, with several nearby states having higher growth rates. This is represented in a field that enjoys annual salaries from the mid-$30,000’s to the lower $50,000’s in Iowa, and slightly higher across the United States.
Job outlook
Poweshiek County and the District have challenges that will be suited by this addition. Namely, Auto Technicians recruited by dealerships in this area will frequently come to the area to get some experience on their resumes, then move on to larger communities. The dealerships are in need of a workforce that they can count on and invest in further certification training. The ASE certification through NATEF will provide the basic information and experience for the technician. Dealerships will then send likely candidates to “finish” off with a certification in Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, etc. specifics. Our advisory board, made up of various dealerships as well as small mechanic shops, agree that training for the ASE certificate will provide the strong basis for the technician to be able to qualify for specialized certifications.
