Career
An interest in and curiosity about the events, people and ideas of the past are characteristics of someone involved in a career dealing with history. Historians research, analyze and interpret the past through writing, teaching and research. Historians often specialize in the history of a specific country or region or period of time. Historians study and preserve archival materials, artifacts and historic buildings and sites. They are included in a larger group called social scientists which include anthropologists, archaeologists, geographers, political scientists and sociologists, whose general job description is the study of all aspects of society.
Job outlook
Overall employment of social scientists is expected to grow; however competition is expected to be stiff in the teaching field. Job prospects are best for those with advanced degrees.
What/Where the jobs are
Research assistants, administrative aides, teachers in secondary and elementary schools, museum curators, researchers, biographers, social service organizations, government agencies, historical societies.
