Tigers Score Second OT Victory
MASON CITY, IA – The MCC men’s soccer team maintained their position in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) standings with a 1-0 overtime win over conference rival NIACC.
The Tigers (8-3-1, 6-2), had five shots in the first half of play and six in the second, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net. Neither team recorded a goal in regulation to force overtime. The decisive MCC strike came two minutes into overtime off a goal from freshmen Ignacio Bello (Saukville, WI) assisted by sophomore Javier Lopez (Granada, Spain).
Bello and fellow sophomore Bruno Liozzi (Sao Paolo, Brazil) paced the offense with three shots each, while sophomore goalkeepers Alfredo Piedra (Columbus Junction, IA) and Juan Castrejon (Chicago, IL) recorded two saves each.
“This was a good physical effort by both teams,” said MCC head coach Rafael Martinez. “It was great to see our guys stay disciplined and play our style, even when things weren’t going our way.”
The Tigers continue their league play at home Saturday, with their second match of the season against Iowa Western Community College. The Tigers lost to Iowa Western 0-3 on September 11. The ICCAC matchup is scheduled to start at 2 pm.
