Tigers Fall Short of Upset
MARSHALLTOWN, IA – The MCC men’s soccer team needed a strong effort on both sides of the ball on Saturday when they hosted No. 5-ranked Iowa Western Community College. Despite a late push, the Tigers fell to the Reivers, 3-2 in an Iowa Community College Conference loss.
The Tigers (8-4-1, 6-3) struck early in the fifth minute of play with a goal by sophomore Javier Lopez (Granada, Spain) assisted by sophomore Bruno Liozzi (Sao Paolo, Brazil). The Tigers would hold the Reivers scoreless until Patrick Price of Iowa Western would score his team’s first of two goals of the half, 20 minutes into play.
Iowa Western would take a 2-1 lead into the half after a score in the 40th minute by Olivier Rolland. Iowa Western outshot the Tigers 8-2 in the half. Tiger sophomore goalkeeper Alfredo Piedra (Columbus Junction, IA) would record two of his five saves in the first half.
The Reivers would score their third and final goal 33 minutes into the second half, which would prove to be the winning goal of the match. The Tiger’s put their second goal of the afternoon on the board 87 minutes into play by sophomore Joao De Olivera (Sao Paolo, Brazil), but it would not be enough as the Reivers held the Tigers scoreless for the last three minutes of play for the win.
MCC will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 9, playing host to the Iowa State Soccer Club. Match time is scheduled for 4 pm.
