Tigers Grind Out 1-1 Double-Overtime Tie Against Iowa Central
MARSHALLTOWN, IA – Even with receiving votes in this week’s NJCCA II national
rankings, the MCC men’s soccer team knew it would take a strong effort to pull off an upset of 9th ranked Iowa Central Community College (13-1-2, 8-1-2).
The Tigers appeared to up to the challenge, holding the Tritons scoreless for most of the first half. MCC outshot Iowa Central 5-1 on the half, but it would only take one shot from the Tritons 41 minutes into play to take the lead.
MCC would continue to outshoot the Tritons in the second half, but were only able to put one ball in the net at the 74th minute. A shot from freshmen Marcus Boehler (Yokosuka, Japan) off the assist from sophomore Javier Lopez (Granada, Spain) would send the match into overtime play.
Both teams would have opportunities in overtime, but neither was able to convert a shot to record the winning score. MCC had won their two previous contests that had come down to overtime play.
“I thought this was our best performance of the season, from all players on the field,” said head coach Rafael Martinez. “The outcome is a little hard to take as I felt the guys played hard enough to earn more than a tie. We have focused all season on being our best each and every night and learning from each match we are finally starting to get recognized for the effort.”
The Tigers will return to the road Saturday traveling to Ottumwa, to face Indian Hills Community College. MCC beat the Warrior 3-2 in overtime play on September 25. Match time is scheduled for 3 pm.
