Tiger Volleyball "Digs" Past Southeastern
MARSHALLTOWN, IA – The MCC volleyball team (10-19, 3-2) gave their sophomore class a good sendoff by sweeping visiting conference foe Southeastern Community College 25-21, 25-16, 25-19. The Tigers honored sophomores Tanya Literski (Athens, WI), Mady Van Meter (Marshalltown, IA), Ashton Baardseth (Marshalltown, IA) and Sam Oujiri (Cedar Rapids, IA) in a ceremony before the match.
The Tigers would have to get the job done without Van Metre, who suffered a concussion during a basketball scrimmage on Sunday. Van Metre currently leads the nation in kills for NJCAA II teams.
“We knew that we’d have some big shoes to fill and that we’d have to play solid all the way around to come out with a win tonight,” said head coach Chris Brees. “We had a lot of things going on tonight, not having Mady, sophomore night and dig pink night, so focus was going to be a point for us.”
MCC jumped out to an early lead in first set behind the heavy hitting of freshmen Katelyn Yauslin (Cedar Rapids, IA). Yauslin was moved to hit left side after spending a majority of the season hitting on the off-hand side. She pounded 7 kills to put MCC up 1-0.
The Tigers used a more balance attack to secure the second set. Five tigers recorded a kill in the set, with Yauslin contributing 4 of her team high 15 in the set. Defensively it was freshmen libero Ashley Salgado (Ottumwa, IA) who paced the Tigers with 7 digs in the set. Salgado would go on to record 19 digs on the evening.
MCC kept the hitting efficiency in the third and final set, with six Tigers recording kills. Southeastern was unable to come up with an answer giving up 10 hitting errors in the set. A 5-0 run behind the serving of Salgado midway through the set, would give the Tigers a six point lead that they wouldn’t relinquish.
MCC heads to Rockford, IL this weekend to play in the Kishwaukee Invitational. The Tigers open up against Blackhawk Community College on Friday with match time scheduled for 12 pm.
