Tiger women fall to Grand View
DES MOINES, IA - The MCC women's basketball team were unable to overcome a sluggish start to the second half, putting them on the losing end of their season opener to Grand View University JV, 71-62.
MCC sohomore Mady Van Metre (Marshalltown, IA) scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half to help give the Tigers a 30-26 halftime lead. The Tigers used a well balanced scoring attack to open the game as all seven active players scored points for MCC in the half.
The Tigers came out cold at the start of the second half, going 1-8 from the floor in the first four minutes. MCC's cold shooting would also plague them at the free throw line, as the Tigers missed 11 of their 21 opportunities from the charity stripe in the half.
Down by 12 points with 4:36 left in the game, MCC cut the deficit to 2 points thanks to three field goals inside the paint from sophomore center Latrice McMullen (Waterloo, IA). Two back-to-back turnovers by the Tigers would put the Vikings back up by 6.
"We just didn't come out and play hard for two halves," said head coach Alison Lacey. "We did not execute what we needed to on both sides of the ball; we need to use this as a learning experience. There is a lot of season to be played."
MCC was 22 of 54 from the field and 2 of 26 from three point land. McMullen scored 14 points and pulled down a team high 11 rebounds for the Tigers.
MCC falls to 0-1 on the early season. The Lady Tigers will travel to Hutchinson, Kansas to play in the Hutchinson Classic on November 9th.
