MCC Soccer Season Preview Fall 2012
The 2011 soccer season became the most successful season the Tigers have had since 2007, when the MCC soccer team finished 3rd in the NJCAA National Tournament. With a record of 12-5-1, the Tigers finished 3rd in Region XI, and ranked #20 of the NJCAA Division I national rankings. Another high point of the season was winning the 2011 Minnesota Kickoff Classic, a Labor Day weekend tournament hosted by Dakota County Tech that included junior colleges from all over the country. The Tigers dominated the tournament, scoring 12 goals and not receiving any, for three wins and 29 points out of 30 possible. A disappointing loss in the first round of the playoffs kept their run short. Head Coach Rafael Martinez looks forward to the 2012 season to improve the overall record and compete for the Regional Tournament.
“2011 was very special for us,” said Coach Martinez. “A great group of sophomores and very talented freshmen came together as a unit to accomplish what had not been done for several years. The entire coaching staff and players pushed themselves to improve each day, which resulted in winning six out of the last seven conference games, including a victory over #14 NIACC by 2-0 at their home field. The only down side was not being able to advance in the tournament, something we hope to improve in 2012. In our conversations with returning players and recruits, the number one topic was the necessity to improve what we have accomplished in the past. We are setting very high expectations for every individual and the entire program, and I have the confidence that if everyone involved gives their best, we will reach those expectations."
Besides the success on the field, the MCC soccer team has excelled in the classroom and in the community. The overall cumulative GPA at the end of the Spring 2012 semester for the entire roster was 3.0. The program was also involved in several volunteering opportunities in Marshalltown. The team helped organizations such as Parks and Rec, Boy Scouts of America, the school district and the soccer club (MASC) by providing coaches and officials for their camps and tournaments.
This year’s schedule will include the second trip to the Minnesota Kickoff Classic Tournament, a very competitive Region XI schedule, and games against NCAA and NAIA programs. The 2012 season will also bring an opportunity for female students to play soccer at MCC. For the second year in a row, there will be a women’s club team competing with other colleges from Iowa. “This is something the administration, the coaching staff and the community of Marshalltown want to see develop. There are many girls from Marshall County that want to continue playing soccer in college, so we are trying to provide the chance for our female students to enjoy the sport of soccer while developing character traits like teamwork, integrity and sacrifice.”
